High Street

After scrutinising the contents of my rather sparse wardrobe, it dawned on me that I was a growing boy and couldn't keep wearing clothes I've owned for over five years. It's not that I don't care about my image, I actually care about it a great deal - It's just I'm such an incredibly lazy and busy person that I can't spare the time to go to town and do a little shopping.

If I were to burn all the clothes I deem to be uncool, and ignored all my cold weather clothing, I would be left with practically nothing to wear. Therefore I made some hasty phone calls to get some of my mates into town to accompany me whilst I get kitted up for the Summer.

I was glad I brought Torquer with me, who despite dragging me into a "Tesco Metro" to buy one tube of toothpaste (to earn club card points and use up club card vouchers) and a "Boots" to buy some Dead Sea facial scrub, seems to possess unrivalled knowledge of every clothing retailer in Liverpool.

I don't normally shop in any of the fashionable outlets (or shop at all) so it was slightly intimidating when we entered shops like "Topman", "Burton" and "GAP" where the doors are flanked by emos clad in black with various bits of metal nailed to their faces. Topman in particular was some kind of grungefest, where a hybrid species of Surfer/Emo had evolved.

I also noticed that stripes seem to be incredibly fashionable right now, especially stripey hoodies (to cater to the chav community no doubt). Burton had nothing but stripes and I left when I couldn't find a single fleece with a zip (not in season apparently).

And GAP - £40 for a pair of jeans? Are you having a laugh? Just because it's multi-tonal and has a couple of fashionable rips doesn't mean I'm gonna fork out an extra £30 for a pair. Torquer told me that Marks & Spencers do jeans that look exactly the same as GAP for half the price which made me feel somewhat better (he's a wealth of information that lad. Don't know what I'd do without him).

You may gather from all this that I don't go shopping often. The most I've spent on one piece of clothing was a pair of trainers for £40. The idea of spending more than £5 for a shirt or £10 for a pair of jeans makes me hyperventilate.

So we rounded off the day with a trip to the MetQuarter - where the most fashionable shops are situated (Gucci Exchange, Prada etc.). We didn't buy anything (far too expensive), but we did see Mikel Arteta and Tim Cahill shopping there.

People who watched the 2006 World Cup or are fans of the Australia national team may be familiar with Tim Cahill, who scored twice against Japan in the World Cup finals and was part of the team that nearly beat the eventual winners Italy - So he's pretty damn famous. I wanted to get my picture taken with him but my friends wouldn't allow it - they claimed that since we were Liverpool fans, it would be like fraternising with the enemy.

A shame really. Later on we watched a crappy Horror film.

I plan to go on another shopping expedition after my GCSEs. Hopefully then I'll actually buy something.

Those prices are ridiculous.

I've been doing my shopping at stores that sell last years fashions, Then buy my jeans at Walmart for $11. I don't give a crap if I'm 12 months out of style.

I have underwear from 1987 that is still going strong.

Good luck on your quest.

I don't care about fashion either - I just want a fleece with a zip! But it's out of season apparently...

£40? Bah. Try $100 for a pair that look just like my dad's after coming back from work. Those are really sandblasted.

Well, it's good to know it doesn't happen to me only. Clothes are getting stupidly expensive these days, and being a person who still wears XXG (but not for long, I hope), you can imagine the hell I have to go through.

The Dead Sea facial scrub... was it purchased by Torquer? I wonder if it was for his mom, unless there might be some M... trends developing. I have nothing against it, tough, it's just that it doesn't fit the picture I've got from him. Could it be possible to get my curiosity satisfied (or can we all have a go at him)?

I'd give anything, anything, to see Zidane in real life...

Anyway, I don't do much shopping either. I spend a great portion of my pay on books, and not so much on clothes. I try to be prudent whenever I shop - I won't get something immediately even if I like it at first sight; I'll usually go home empty-handed first, and after a few days if I find myself still thinking desperately about that item, I'll return to buy it. Of course, there's the possibility that something I like may be gone by the time I go back for it, but well, I don't want to get something which I may end up regret buying.

Heh, Tk max is good if you care abit about fashion :D. At the moment i'm being a bit of a clothes whore what with all my spare cash and that...

but i did get an awsome leather jacket for 40 quid second hand...not bad i'm sure you'll agree. (and the bloke in the shop gave me a free tie, i'll never wear it but...spots are cool...better than stripes any..*cough* no i've done that rant ^^

eric: I'll have to ask your dad to get me a pair ;)

usual stuff: In my eager haste to write the post, I "forgot" to mention he was buying it for his mum ;)

Feel free to have a go at him, he doesn't mind!

miao: I'm a real impulse buyer so have made some poor decisions in the past.

I used to spend a lot on books, now I've calmed down a little.

Quirkalope: TK Maxx is pretty cool but it's such a mess and there's no organisation to their clothing. I just can't be bothering shifting through all that clothing!

leather jackets are ridiculously expensive so that was quite a bargain! well done.

Torquer said...

TK Maxx is just one big pile of Hugo Boss plain white T-shirts for £15!! I got one in Peacocks for £2.50.

About the soap: it was for my step-grand mother OK.

Seriously it was.

PS Can't wait for the new Primark store to open in Liverpool. I got some new jeans for £6 in the Nottingham store not long ago.

I have noticed the horizontal striped hoody's,i thought they had fell off the back of a wagon and were getting sold off cheap?

I'm in a sad state, where, at the age of 21, i still have to be dragged kicking (but not screaming, give me some last shreds of dignity) to the departmental store to get clothes. By my mother. During chinese new year.

its going to be a lifelong affliction, i can forsee.

I'm a girl and I hate hate hate shopping! Especially in New York city, it's really expensive here too. I keep stumbling on "sales" where 50% off is still in the $100-$200 range!!!!

I find a three piece suit and 5 shirts and ties to match does for every occasion Mr J. I also have a parka and some jeans from Tesco. As you can see from my blog - I am doing very well at meeting ladies these days...perhaps you recall your first attackon me...??

Shopping? yuck. Always been a least favorite for me. Moomer usually has to force me to buy something, (or else buy it for me herself, hehe)
Oh.
About horrors: I think that books are way better, they get your imagination running all over the place, especially if they're the horror type. I know that was late, but i didn't get to comment on the other post:D
G'night!

You don't know how happy I got after reading your post. I went shopping with my friends - and ended up with only two bags...

... with books, CDs, DVD's, but no clothes...

D'oh!

torquer: can't wait for the Primark! Perhaps we can get jobs there?

gaz: I think they're alright, although they are ridiculously priced. I'll wait until they go out of season.

shoufarn: I used to be like that, but then I started caring about my appearance...

idbug: a girl who hates shopping?!?

mutley: I'm still a bit too young to pull off a 3 piece suit!

I'm glad you're hitting it off with the ladies. And I do recall my first "attack" on you, although I thought that was banter ;)

crash: I'm trying to cut down on buying DVDs and books! At the rate I'm spending, I won't be able to buy a Wii in the summer!

With most clothe nowadays coming from China, India, Malaysia, etc., who would be so stupid to pay the extorionate price for a brand?

gneake said...

Agreed. When you overseas to Asia, buy all your gear there - it's like a bargain everywhere, all year round. I still wear a lot of stuff since high school, but that's because I never rolled in the mud and soiled them so quickly, plus it pays to buy clothes that are classic.

Not that I care much about my appearance, but I understand how it can influence mood and how you see yourself relative to how you think others see you. Fashion and image is complicated, and I find that it's most liberating to dress like you rolled out of your closet. Some call it daggy, but I call it debonair.

The Usual Stuff said...

Purchasing Chinese shoes is not a good investment in the long run. Shure you can get a pair for $100 pesos (around $9 USCy), but their gonna last 2 months!!

Clothes shopping?

* tuts *

Tell me about it. I can't find a suitable wide brimmed pointy hat and nefarious cloak set for love nor money!

P.S. Don't tempt Mutley into pulling your suit off...

The most that I have paid for a pair of jeans is $35. I'm cheap.

The Usual Stuff said...

I get my trousers (or whatever ladies' formal pants are called) tailored at 3 for $40 USCy plus around $10 for the fabric. That's as cheap as it can get in my city, for extra large sizes (oh, I'm so ashamed!)

Jingo said...

anon: me unfortunately. damn peer pressure!

gneake: I do buy quite a lot of clothes from China, which is great 'cos they're cheaper and unique when I come back.

Although they are really poor quality.

usual stuff: The problem with me is that I'm quite slim, although my hips are relatively quite wide (from when I was quite fat when I was young). I doubt my waist will ever get smaller! :(

device: Hate hats. Although I've been told I look like a chimney sweep whenever I wear a Trillby (sp.?)

Oh and very funny ;)

thinker: I'm cheap as well. I thought all young girls were big into fashion?

I have shopped in Op Shops all my life, looked for bargains, gone to sales......to be honest, I'm a bit sick of it and I really like buying clothes now.....I STILL don't have enough money to go shopping very often!!!! If I ever do, I still won't buy THE most expensive, but just the ones I liked. It's taken me years to decide what I actually like to wear and look OK in!!! hahaha

Jingo said...

It's still taking me years to decide what I'm comfortable wearing. Bright colours of earth colours? T-shirts or striped shirts? Ah the choices!
